Claiborne Cultural Innovation District

Project Overview

The Claiborne Corridor Innovation District (CCID) is a visionary 19-block transformation beneath the elevated I-10 expressway along North Claiborne Avenue, extending from Canal Street to St. Bernard Avenue. Designed around green infrastructure and community-centered development, the district reimagines underutilized public space as a vibrant cultural and economic destination.

The master plan incorporates spaces for arts and crafts vendors, produce markets, seafood vendors, classrooms, exhibition areas, interactive technology, educational demonstrations, and community programming. The district is envisioned as a destination that supports youth engagement, environmental education, workforce development, entrepreneurship, and neighborhood services.

As a culture-based economic driver, the CCID creates opportunities for indigenous entrepreneurs and culture bearers while strengthening community capacity through workshops, public events, health services, and business development initiatives. The project provides direct pathways toward equitable and sustainable neighborhood revitalization.

The completed Back-A-Town demonstration project represents the first four blocks of the overall 19-block vision, showcasing how public infrastructure can be transformed into an active civic landscape that celebrates culture, supports local businesses, and reconnects the surrounding community.
