The Divine Nine Plaza

Project Overview

The Divine Nine Plaza is a 0.18-acre project located on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta, Georgia. The plaza celebrates the nine historic African American fraternity and sorority organizations, whose histories date back to 1906. After decades of seeking a permanent place on campus, the project fulfills a long-standing goal by creating a space that honors their history, culture, and legacy.

Developed through extensive collaboration with Georgia Tech staff, students, alumni, and Divine Nine representatives, the plaza embraces the sacred traditions of these organizations while creating a welcoming civic space for gatherings, ceremonies, and daily campus life.

The design features a performance stage, nine individual plots that allow each organization to celebrate its identity through colors, crests, and history, and a shared central gathering space that encourages unity. A flexible lawn accommodates tailgating, cookouts, picnics, and campus events throughout the year.

Carefully selected planting reinforces Georgia Tech's urban forest character while creating an inviting landscape that balances commemoration with everyday use. The completed plaza reflects the collective voices, history, and enduring legacy of the Divine Nine organizations on the Georgia Tech campus.
