Kerlerec Residence courtyard and pool in New Orleans

Project Overview

The Kerlerec Residence is located on Kerlerec Street in the historic Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. Inspired by the Moorish architecture the owners experienced during a trip to Northern Africa, the project brings elements of that architectural tradition into their home while remaining grounded in the classic character of New Orleans.

Water is a principal design element in Moorish architecture, connecting the past and present while evoking emotion and engaging the senses. The courtyard is organized around a square pool measuring 15'-6" by 15'. Centered on the pool is an elevated wall featuring a brass water fixture with three waterspouts.

Adjacent to the pool, a raised fire pit accessible from the patio creates a warm and intimate gathering space for the owners and their guests. Together, the water and fire elements establish a strong focal point within the compact courtyard.

Lush planting is strategically positioned as a backdrop for the pool and elevated wall, drawing attention toward the center of the space while adding softness and a natural layer to the courtyard. The combination of water, vegetation, fire, and carefully considered detailing creates a serene outdoor retreat in the heart of New Orleans.
