Project Overview

The Historic District of Faubourg Marigny is possibly one of the most difficult places to attempt residential design in the City of New Orleans. Founded in 1805, almost 90 years after the city was established, the neighborhood fiercely protects the forms and functions of each lot through the Faubourg Marigny Improvement Association.

The association and many neighborhood residents are dedicated to meeting and rivaling the strict guidelines of the adjacent French Quarter, or Vieux Carré, Commission. DesignJones was asked to reimagine an overgrown 70-foot-by-70-foot space connected to a home built in 1880.

The design responds to the client's varied programming needs while remaining sensitive to the historic character of the neighborhood. Dr. Sholas cherishes meditative spaces while also hosting one of the largest Krewe du Vieux events in the neighborhood.

The resulting landscape is centered around a pool that can serve as a major gathering place for hundreds of guests while also providing a peaceful setting for solitary reflection.
