SUNO Athletic Field and Bio-Retention

New Orleans, Louisiana

SUNO Athletic Field and Bio-Retention master plan

Project Overview

DesignJones served as the principal landscape architect for student outreach, design, and construction documentation for the development of athletic facilities and bio-retention systems at Southern University at New Orleans' Lakefront campus. The project focused on creating a modern, functional recreational environment while integrating sustainable site strategies.

The scope of work included the design and construction oversight of a running and jogging track, regulation soccer field, basketball court, and supporting campus infrastructure. Each athletic component was designed to enhance student wellness while strengthening the university's outdoor recreational opportunities.

Sustainable Sites principles guided the stormwater management approach, incorporating bio-retention systems and surface drainage strategies that improve water quality while reducing runoff. These systems provide both environmental benefits and educational opportunities for the campus community.

Completed in 2014, the project demonstrates how athletic facilities and resilient landscape infrastructure can be integrated to create a healthier, more sustainable campus environment that supports both recreation and ecological performance.
